In addition, you could experience serious plumbing issues if you have a power outage during the winter and your pipes freeze. Appliances can become damaged from the intemperate climate. Your home will lose its comfortable temperature as your cooling or heating leaks to the outside. Their fridges and freezer cease to function, the HVAC systems shut down, and any equipment or devices that depend on power are rendered useless.Īfter a period of time, your freezers and fridges can no longer keep your food cold. When people experience a power outage and go without the help of a generator, their homes and possessions are exposed to the environment. Easily Salvage Appliances, Food, and Utilities Not to mention, having a fully ready generator with automatic turn-on capabilities keeps you safer by saving you from having to fuel it and manually start it. During installation, you’ll choose exactly the resources you need to stay powered on and the generator will automatically supply power to those things during the power outage. You won’t need to store them away and set up them when you need them. Standby generators are always hooked up to your home. Standby generators allow you to skip all those steps by being readily available at the flick of a switch (or with no effort at all if the generator is automatic). They require you to pull them out from storage, fuel them up, and hook them up to the devices you need to power. Portable generators require a lot of effort because they must be stored while not in use and set up once you need them. In addition, having a standby generator as backup power for your home is much safer than going without, as it will help you keep the lights on to avoid hurting yourself in the dark. Instead of requiring you to add fuel, they are hooked up to your existing fuel supply, such as your natural gas line. They also are kept outside the home so that there is no buildup of fumes in your living space. Standby generators, on the other hand, do not release fumes in the same volume as portable generators. By running portable generators inside your home, you risk carbon monoxide buildup that could cause health issues.įuel can also be dangerous near a fire, which you might be using for candles and to light fuses during your power outage. Unfortunately, this means releasing fumes close to where you’re living. Portable generators often use fuel and you have to keep them nearby enough to connect to your essential appliances. It also saves you money in the long run if you own a home and often leave for hours at a time. A home backup generator offers improved safety and security as well as convenience and efficiency. In most cases, investing in a standby generator has the most benefits. They’re also more affordable, although they aren’t always as powerful or convenient. Portable generators are the best option for people who are not allowed to install standby generators because they don’t own the building. Standby generators run on fuel, so you should always keep some handy in the event of an unexpected outage. Standby generators are installed so that they can automatically turn on in the case of a power outage to power the devices they are connected to. The main difference between a portable generator and a standby generator is that a portable generator isn’t a permanent fixture of the building and must be manually set up for each use. Depending on your budget and what devices you want to power, whole-home generators come in different models and sizes. Which one you choose will depend on exactly what situations you plan to use it for, which devices you need to power and the amount of space and money you have.Ī portable generator is a small power supply that usually runs on a rechargeable battery or fuel. You can choose to invest in a portable generator or a standby generator. There are two different types of generators that you can utilize during a power outage or when there’s a lack of electricity. A whole-home standby generator will kick on when you need it so you can keep the essentials functioning. Investing in a standby generator will help avoid the discomfort, household damage, and unexpected expenses that can happen when your power goes out. Losing the use of your appliances for too long can rack up major expenses, and you could lose access to important communication channels that you could need in the case of an emergency. That’s why so many people feel powerless during a power outage.Įven if you can handle a few days without electricity, there’s no reason you have to. For those of us that do, we take it for granted. According to Our World in Data, 940 million people don’t have access to electricity.

A powerful Aes Sedai of the Blue Ajah, Moiraine has been on a quest to find the Dragon Reborn. Moiraine is to The Wheel of Time what Gandalf is to The Lord of the Rings. That core group waxes and wanes over the books, and season two will add at least a few key players. Rather than one or two main characters, The Wheel of Time has an ensemble cast. Sass - Sass makes CSS fun Rails Assets - The solution to assets management in Rails. To help Webpack understand images, svg files, and fonts in your Rails project, Webpacker adds the file-loader package. A suitable loader would know how to handle an image file and output a representation of something, like an inlined base64 string, that can be manipulated in JavaScript. With webpack, you can manage JavaScript, CSS, and static assets like images or fonts. (This made me feel as if the JS community was the Wild West that has not reached the same level of conformity than the Ruby community). Image Optimizer is a free image optimization plugin based on API. Out of the box, Webpacker generates configurations that applies the best practices for development, staging, and production environments. They introduced the Webpacker gem, which was compatible for Rails 4.2+. To help Webpack understand images, projects would add a "loader" (or loaders) to the Webpack configuration. There were no less than 4 Webpack loaders that did the same thing: import-glob-loader, node-sass-glob-importer, import-glob, sass-resources-loader. Enter Webpacker Fortunately, the Rails community had also identified the need for Webpack. Generally, Webpack will treat everything it can understand as a JavaScript module. You can fork the code on GitHub and improve it Feel free tocontact me for assistance. The short answer, of course, is it depends. How to optimize images in webpack Images take more than a half of the size of an average page: That’s a lot of traffic But with webpack, it’s easy to decrease it. ImageOptim is free, open-source software under terms of the GPL v2 or later. I understood it to be a JavaScript module bundler. There are 16 other projects in the npm registry using rails/webpacker. Start using rails/webpacker in your project by running npm i rails/webpacker. Latest version: 5.4.4, last published: 25 days ago. I have to admit, a few years ago, when I first heard about Webpack, I was super-confused. Use webpack to manage app-like JavaScript modules in Rails. Default : &default resolved_paths : - app/assets Things like insects or aquatic creatures. One inspiration was to have creatures that are close to humans, but that we’re not able to understand. It’s important to have that kind of opposition. Instead, while being different from humans, they have their values, their culture and intellect. I don’t want to make simple enemies, who are here just for the sake of it. This is a part where I’m still deeply involved. What are your mains inspirations in creature design? I believe it’s fun to have something like that, which makes that theme important to me.” Their existence leads to fighting with humans. They are different from humans, but they have their own mind and hierarchy. Rather than focusing on that aspect, I try to avoid making enemies that are simple pawns. Toyama: “This probably won’t be changing. Is the concept of the hive mind (which we also had with the Shibito) important to you? The Shibito nest in SIREN: Blood Curse was already reminiscent of the city of Kowloon in Hong Kong. I put attention to that rather than having jump-scares.” In that sense, you enter a world that is unknown to you, which naturally scares you. Toyama: “No, we first focus on world-building and matching the feelings of the player with the characters. This will result in having elements that surprise the player.”ĭo you feel it’s just how players perceived your games in the end? Sato: “I feel you don’t intentionally try to surprise the player. Sometimes there’s emotion but it’s not scary.” I then wonder of how to immerse the player. Aren’t you conscious of it? Rather than thinking of how to scare the players, I have a fascination for scenes that generate fear. I always ended up thinking that I made yet another game that isn’t scary. Toyama: “First, I believe everyone in this room knows it. How would you rate Slitterhead matching up to your previous creations? Would you say this is your most terrifying game to date? It’s fair to say that you all have made some of the most iconic horror games of all time. But I want to include as many languages as possible.” We already have English, however I can’t say for now the extent of languages that we’re going to add. We’re currently pursuing development in both Japanese and English. Is there a plan for multiple languages support for Slitterhead? We’re thinking of allowing the player to initiate the attacks as well.”Īre there also scenes where you’re pushed to run away? Junya Okura, Game Director: “I believe the question is whether you can fight back. Will the players be able to fight back or is the gameplay going to encourage us to escape from confrontation? I keep in mind to make a game that is accessible.” It’s aimed at players who are not necessarily core fans of the horror genre, I want young players to be able to experience that as well. This is type of challenge that I want to take on for Slitterhead. Instead, I will make something I currently find fun and that is new. This is why I won’t go in that direction again. A couple of decades later, there are now plenty of good games within that genre. I believed I had found that in the modern horror genre. When I made Silent Hill, I had this idea that it would be fun to make something that had never been made before. Keiichiro Toyama, Creative Director: “For me, it doesn’t differ that much. Each skill has a main line through the center and two lines of skills along the side. If you decide you don’t like how you distributed your skill points, you can spend some crystals to reset them. It is pretty easy to forget to click the “apply” button but, if you do forget, you’ll see a number in the lower left of your character’s portrait so you can pop right back in and do it right. Doing so gives you more attribute points, more skill points, and access to more skills.Īttribute points are pretty straightforward. As you play the game and collect more gold, you’ll buy new levels in the barracks. Be sure to inspect the fountain – if it looks nasty then it probably will subtract!Īfter you get through the prologue and get your first two characters, you’ll have just three skills. Fountains will permanently add or subtract statistics as well. Magic scrolls in the tower will let you permanently add to your characters’ statistics, though the biggest ones will typically take something away as well. The item retains all of its item forge slots, too, and may even gain one. If you improve a blue (ancient) item, it will turn into a relic and you’ll be able to enchant it. These can increase the power of one of your items. The more powerful an item is, the fewer slots it will typically have.įorges also exist within the tower. The first enhancement just costs green crystals, the next blue, and after that it costs purples. Once the item forge opens up, you can use it to enhance the item as many times as there are slots. Those are slots for the item forge to work with. If you look at the details of your item, there should be at least one square in the upper left. The item forge is another way to enhance your stuff. You get to pick the type of item, the level, and whether it’s magic, ancient, or relic. I haven’t used it much but it will make a new, random item for you. You can also use crystals to make completely new items. Yellow, legendary items with enchantments can’t be re-enchanted with something different. If you don’t like an enchantment, you can put a different enchantment on the relic but I don’t think you get any credit for the original – it’s simply wasted. Each costs a number of purple crystals, making those crystals very valuable. Once you learn an enchantment, you can use it as many times as you like. Purple “relic” items can be enchanted with the enchantments you find lying around in the tower or earned in challenges. Don’t be lazy, though! That purple helmet might have more power than the green one you’re wearing but your green may be adding something you really need while the purple has strengths that don’t help you. Items also have a level, which you can see as roman numerals in the lower right corner of the item’s icon in your inventory. Magic (green) items are typically the weakest, ancient (blue) items are a bit stronger, then relic (purple) items, and finally legendary (yellow) items. Between battles and chests, you’ll get plenty of these! Your inventory appears to be pretty huge but don’t hang on to items you’re pretty sure you won’t use. You can also destroy items you no longer want for crystals. You can also combine 3 green crystals into one blue or 3 blues into one purple once the transmute option opens up. When you get the blacksmith going and upgraded you can use crystals to create new, random items, or enhance your existing items. You can not use gold to buy items or sell items for cash! Essentially, gold acts like experience points in other games.Ĭrystals: These are the currency of items. It’s also used for upgrading the buildings. Breaking up elemental attacks into multiple attacks doesn't really matter but it sure does with armor. If these had been pysical attacks against 50 armor, the five attacks would do 0+0+0+0+0 damage for a total of dink while the 100pt attack would do 100 - 50 = 50pts of damage. If you hit it with one attack doing 100pts it will still do 50pts. So, does everybody remember that whole distributive thing from their math classes? Time to put it to use! If the enemy has 50% resistance to your attack and you hit it with 5 attacks doing 20pts each, you will do 10+10+10+10+10 damage for a total of 50pts. If you hit the enemy with a 50 point fire attack, that enemy has 50% resistance to fire, but you've got 10% penetration then you'll do 60% of 50 points of damage, so 30 points. If it has a -50%, though, you’ll do 75 damage!Įlemental penetration subtracts a percentage from the enemy's resistance. If you hit an enemy with a 50 point fire attack and that enemy has 50% resistance then you’ll only do 25 points of damage. While armor works on points, elemental powers work on percentages. It isn't trivial to discuss 3D software here, especially Blender, because of the broad use cases of multiple industries, as discussed in Part 1. Open-source 3D graphics software: Blender Penpot's UI is easy to use and pleasant by modern standards, that you'll find familiar when coming from other software. I think Penpot is already suitable to be used professionally for small to medium UI projects, but the proprietary tools just still being smoother in almost every areas, it may still require a little more time until I can suggest to use it for really complex projects too. Penpot's current feature set is somewhere between Sketch's and Figma's: the set of design tools are a bit more limited, and as such closer to Sketch, while collaborative and organizational features are more similar to Figma.Įven though I compared Penpot to the former to put it into context, Penpot has its own distinctive vision, and I think it manages and shapes it extremely well. Penpot is in massive development: it's just about to drop the 'beta' label. Penpot's native file format is SVG-based, being intentionally accessible. Though Penpot is an online tool, the app itself is open-source, which means you can setup and run your own instance locally if you wish (though it's technically challenging, as there isn't a pre-packaged desktop app available yet). Open-source UX/UI design software is a new endeavour, and the first serious achievement likely is Penpot: a browser-based collaborative design tool, similar to Figma. This means, in general they're much more accessible than conservative desktop software, and run platform-independently on multiple OSs, including of course Linux. These tools often put a huge emphasis on collaboration, and are built on browser- and internet technologies. The category's software conventions were just built up over the last couple of years, and major vendors are often young companies, like Figma. The software category of dedicated UX and UI design software is relatively new when compared to the groups above. Open-source UX and UI design software: Penpot Scribus doesn't have pixel units, but nothing prevents you from using it for digital layout design, until you use ppi values meaningfully. In many areas, and for a lot of use cases it's comparable to either Adobe InDesign or Affinity Publisher: Scribus offers good page management, serious typographic control, and tools for ultra-precise graphic design work – primarily for print. Scribus's native file format is SVG-based, which means it's so open, that you can practically open, read and edit it in a text editor. Scribus can read all major image, and publication file formats, and can open and edit some vector formats, like SVG. Scribus is an open-source, professional publication and layout design software, with a similar focus like Adobe InDesign and Affinity Publisher. Open-source publication design software: Scribus Still, Gimp is a powerful tool on its own, and probably the most complete image editing software for Linux. easily transition from Photoshop to Affinity Photo or vice versa with little effort – but not to Gimp). The UI evolved a lot over the years, but doesn't follow conventions, so that users must re-learn a lot of tools that otherwise work very similar in other software (you can e.g. Gimp's UI was characterised by unusual floating panels for years, that wasn't common for many. Non-destructive editing is the standard way of working for many professionals, which means Gimp can't be fully considered a true alternative to proprietary image editing software, that have clever features for this. The feature set covers a huge range of professional applications, however the lack of adjustment layers makes non-destructive editing hardly possible. Gimp works with all the important image formats, and opens PSD files (with some limitations). Gimp is designed for similar uses like Adobe Photoshop and Affinity Photo. It's also legendary because of it's fundation, the GTK toolkit became a base of many other GUI applications, including GNOME. Gimp, an open-source image editing app has been around for long on Linux. Version 1.2 added Pages though, so that this important feature is no longer missing. For many years, because of SVG's limitations Inkscape didn't support multi-page documents (or artboards), which was a major drawback. Some users find its UI less intuitive than proprietary competitors', but with some initial learning, especially by getting used to keybindings, it's very efficient. 'The Rock' was given almost no opportunity to show off his undeniable charm. Instead it was pretty much the opposite of all of those things. I was hoping 'Skyscraper' would be in the vein of 'Die Hard', a bad-ass, original and epic action movie where anything felt on the cards as a possibility. Thanks to him, this one is reasonably watchable. The Rock is charismatic enough to carry any action movie to a reasonable level of watchability. Despite all the flaws, I still had a good time watching this. Characters followed up with "I'm kidding." That's usually a reliable indicator that the joke bombed terribly. In addition to the film's inherent silliness, it also attempted several awkward jokes within the first few minutes, all of which whiffed. Certain movies are not meant to be dissected, and one involving a man jumping from one tall structure across the sky into a much taller structure that's on fire, is certainly one of them. While there are a million and one plot holes, that's definitely not something you're supposed to look for in this movie. It's as if the audience would believe all the challenges of this movie would be too easy for him if he had both his natural legs. It's amazing that The Rock has been so built up in the minds of viewers as an indestructible force that writers now have to manufacture weaknesses for him in movies, such as an artificial leg. Rooting for The Rock (and any of his friends or family) is one of my favorite things to do at the movies. She takes down her share of bad guys along the way, fearlessly and intelligently defending her kids. I should have known from the many times I watched the 'Scream' movies, but Neve Campbell is one tough cookie. Speaking of awesome, I have to give it up for Neve Campbell. In this movie, The Rock is awesome because The Rock is always awesome. The only thing here distinguishing him from the characters he plays in other movies, is his love for duct tape. I won't mention The Rock's character's name because I never once thought of him as anyone other than The Rock. So, I consider the skyscraper the main adversary in this film since its sheer height and the raging fire it contains threatens The Rock's family. They're evil because they're evil-no explanation given, no effort. The villains are lame, cardboard cutout characters. The story is largely ridiculous, and although The Rock never actually fights the building (because it's a building), the danger that the building poses is a much greater threat than any posed by the actual villains of this film. If it sounds ridiculous, that's because it is. He's taking on a skyscraper-the most formidable and the most phallic of all buildings. Since no human adversary is any match for The Rock, as he has shown us in past movies, he must now take on non-human adversaries. Your duty is to find ways and clues that will eventually lead you to the correct timeline against the aliens.
